New Year’s resolutions bring hope that the year ahead will bring positive changes. After a challenging 2020, what better way to improve your life and your community than volunteering at Norriton Fire Engine Company?
The volunteers of Norriton Fire Engine Company save lives and protect property, but at the end of the day, are not so different from you. They come from all professions and walks of life – and you can join them in making a difference.
If you’re interested in making a life-changing resolution, follow these three easy steps:
1. Match Your Interests to a Volunteer Position
Are you looking for an adrenaline rush? Our volunteer firefighters at are at the center of the action, responding to fires in residential and commercial buildings, motor vehicle accidents and rescue calls. Firefighters bring calm to chaotic situations in East Norriton Township as well as surrounding communities such as Norristown, Plymouth Meeting and Whitpain.
If you’re ages 16 or 17, but still looking for action, you can join Norriton Fire Engine Company as a junior firefighter. Juniors assist at the scene of fire calls, laying important groundwork for the firefighters, and participate in bi-weekly drills at the station. Once you turn 18, you can become an active firefighter.
Not interested in fighting fires? Consider joining the fire police. During emergencies and community events, you will direct traffic and crowds while working with other first responders. This role requires fire police to make decisions quickly. They assess the scene of fires and car accidents and determine if road closures are needed.
“Don’t worry if you don’t have the skills yet for these positions,” said Fire Company President Kevin McClure. “We provide all our volunteers with training and equipment to be a successful member of our team.”
2. Consider How Much Time you are willing to Donate
Volunteers are only asked to give as much time as they can and are not expected to attend all calls or fire company events. Whether you have a few hours to spare a week or a few hours a month, Norriton Fire Engine Company members will appreciate the extra help.
“We are always looking for extra hands at the station,” said McClure. “Our volunteers are busy working, attending school and caring for their families, so we appreciate any time they are able to give.”
