Joan McDevitt has been around the fire service for most of her life, so she always thought of firefighting as something exciting to do. When she and her husband, Kevin McDevitt, now Chief, moved to East Norriton in the 1980s, she encouraged him to join.
Inspired to Help the Community, New Fire Police Join NFEC

Volunteers Step Up As Leaders at NFEC
Volunteers at Norriton Fire Engine Company aren’t required to attend every drill night or go on every call; however, when volunteers show they are dedicated and take on more responsibility, it is appreciated by all. Two volunteers doing just that are Jim Fessler, who became a Lieutenant in October, and Rick Dinapoli, who was sworn in as a Fire Police Officer in September.

Son Follows in Father’s Footsteps at NFEC
Daniel Hoisington, 16, has wanted to be a firefighter and follow in his father’s footsteps all his life, but he had to wait until he was old enough to do so. Shortly after he turned 16, he joined Norriton Fire Engine Company’s junior volunteer firefighting program and his dad, Earl Hoisington, joined as an active volunteer firefighter.

Non-Firefighting Volunteers Make a Difference
The volunteer firefighters of Norriton Fire Engine Company respond to over 500+ calls a year, and while more volunteer firefighters are always needed, they need administrative volunteers too.
Keeping Volunteer Training Exciting
“Drill nights vary from week to week to keep training exciting,” said Battalion Chief-2 Michael Barnshaw. “We may have drill in a classroom setting and the following week, take what was learned and use it in a hands-on session.”
Dad and Son Love Helping Their Community as Volunteers
Volunteer firefighting is often passed down through the generations from father to son. Fathers bring their sons with them to the firehouse and the sons realize they want to fight fires and create lifelong friendships too. At Norriton Fire Engine Company, this was the case for Dave Ellick Sr., 78, and his son, Dave Ellick Jr., 53.
